Common neck and back injuries

Most accidents involve motor vehicle collisions: Understanding the mechanics of such an injury will help you make informed decisions about your medical care. Understand the nature of the types of neck and back injuries people sustain from low to moderate impacts.

Neck injury

Acceleration-Deceleration Cervical injury involves the muscles, tendons, disks and nerves of the neck. This is sometimes referred to as whiplash. Having such an injury can dramatically increase the likelihood of developing arthritis of the spine, which in turn can develop into chronic life long pain. If nerve, disk or skeletal damage is suspected, your physician will likely order a set of x-rays and or a MRI. Signs of a serious injury to the region of the neck include shooting pain, numbness, tingling, and loss of balance or weakness in the arm or face. Other diagnostic testing includes an EMG, CT scan and myelogram.

Back injury

Acceleration-Deceleration back injury involves the muscles, tendons, disks and nerves surrounding the lumbar and thoracic regions of the spine. Having such an injury can dramatically increase the likelihood of developing arthritis of the lower spine, which in turn can develop into chronic life long pain. If nerve, disk or skeletal damage is suspected, your physician will likely order a set of x-rays and or a MRI. Signs of moderate to serious injury to the back include shooting pain into the legs and thighs, numbness, weakness in the legs, and loss of bladder control. Other diagnostic testing may include an EMG, CT scan and myelogram.
