Family Law & Marriage

In family law, marriage is a legal and personal relationship between a man and a woman, created by agreement. The rights and obligations of married couples are created by state family law. Some of the obligations of married persons can be changed by agreement of the parties; some cannot. Because marriage is a status created by individual states, the rules governing the marital relationship will often vary from state to state. It is important, therefore, to find out the family law of the state where the couple resides as well as the law of the state in which they were married (if that is not where the couple resides).
