Check out the possibilities

Take a good look at the area where you want to live and familiarize yourself with the neighborhood. Then do the same thing at night to assess the nighttime activity. You don't want any nasty surprises after dark once you've moved in.

You can contact the local police department to inquire about crime in the area.

When you reach the point where you're going to check out a specific apartment, then you can focus on the building it's in. Have a look at the condition of the building and its surroundings. Is the building well-maintained? How about the landscaping? If possible, talk to other tenants and to the neighbors to get a sense of how the landlord and/or superintendent runs the building. Try to get a feel for the way in which the neighborhood interacts. If, for example, the building you're considering is next to a school and you work the night shift, daytime noise may be a problem.
