Can I adopt a child who lives in another state?

Domestic and international adoption varies from state to state as to if and how one might do this. If you are considering adoption like this, you should consult a family law attorney who specializes in adoption law.

What about international adoption?

International adoption can be complicated and will depend upon the country in question, but you can expect to be evaluated by an agency authorized by the particular country to conduct adoption evaluations. The evaluation will be sent to the appropriate officials in that country and - if you are approved - you will travel to the country, complete whatever paperwork is necessary, and pick up the child. Depending upon the country, some international adoptions will be final at that point. Others will require an international adoption approval by an American court. You should consult a family law attorney who specializes in adoptions.
