State Laws
Medical and law degrees

In family law, obviously, the judge can't give you some portion of the degree in a divorce case. But in some states, the judge will value that degree and award the other spouse money or other property to compensate for the fact that he or she can't use this valuable asset. In other states, the judge may reimburse the other spouse for the money that was spent to earn the degree. Some judges might award some sort of additional spousal support to compensate the other spouse. This is a developing area of family law, and it is important to consult a family law attorney who is familiar with how this kind of asset is treated in your state.

Stock options

Stock options are treated as property, although the way they will be divided on divorce can be extremely complicated. Generally, to the extent they were earned during the marriage, they will be considered marital property. But this is an area of family law where expert advice is necessary.
