Accounting is the nuts and bolts behind any business. It is the foundation from which other jobs rely. Accounting tells us the health of a business, whether its liabilities will outweigh its assets or whether the business will operate at a profit or a loss. This is why accounting jobs have been so much in demand in recent years.

Accountants engage in a wide variety of financial responsibilities. It includes preparing financial statements, posting business transactions, monitoring costs and building in new cost efficiencies made possible through new technologies. These are just some of the accounting jobs available in most large businesses.

Accounting Jobs – One Of The Best Jobs In America

According to an October 2010 CNN/Money report, the job of a Certified Public Accountant is considered to be one of the best jobs in America to have. However, the number of these highly coveted jobs seems to be decline in recent years resulting in a much more competitive job search.

The job of accountant in today’s high-tech business world is growing in importance and in depth. High-end accounting jobs now include involvement in business mergers, subsidiary spin-offs and acquisitions. The in-house accountant is now called upon to assist in the development of important tax and business strategies including long range planning. If the accountant performs exceedingly well, it can lead to the job of chief financial officer – a highly respected and compensated post in any major business.

Many Types Of Accounting Jobs

There are accounting jobs in consulting, finance, risk management, marketing, research and strategic planning. Likewise, pursuing an accounting career can mean being a CPA or financial consultant. There have been a number of accounting job openings in the areas of auditing, budget analysis, financial accounting and tax auditing.

Among Highest Paid Accounting Jobs

Tax accounting is among the highest paid accounting jobs in the nation. The median income for an entry-level tax accountant job with a fortune five hundred company is estimated to be in excess of $100,000. This is one reason why more accounting students are obtaining advanced degrees in tax accounting. Take Myron Levine, a twelve-year tax accountant in New York; his income jumped nearly 27% when he added tax law to his portfolio of skills. Partners in big-eight accounting firms have been earning seven figures for years, though few people realize accountants can make that kind of money.

Compare this with the entry-level salary for the average public accountant not working for one of the big accounting firms. For these professionals the median annual salary is just about $60,000. After three or so years however the person can be working at a job that makes as much 85,000 a year. The problem of course is that most jobs like these end up defining your income limit. This means if you want a higher paying job you will either need to move jobs or move yourself into an advanced accounting degree.

Notwithstanding the hard numbers, accountants can still earn a very high income if the accountant is also considered to be a rainmaker at the accounting firm. The rainmaker is the one who brings in the new clients and keeps good clients from leaving. This is a job qualification of major importance and it is why some accountant jobs are high-paying while others remain stagnant.

Accounting Jobs Follow New Industries

Certain job areas within the field of accounting are more in demand then others, especially in new and rapidly changing industries like alternative energy, green technology and biogenetics, all of which have been able to show significant strength in recent years. Accounting firms that have deep bench strength in these new market areas will continue to be in high demand, despite the current economic challenges most other industries are facing.

Forensic Accounting Jobs – Public Job Sector

New and exciting accounting jobs are said to be opening in the fields of forensic accounting at both the federal and state law enforcement levels. Forensic accounting is one of the fastest growing fields within law enforcement. These are highly sought after accounting jobs. Many forensic accountants work closely with field investigators and prosecutors within the white-collar units of state and federal law enforcement.
