Avoid
getting a traffic ticket
If
you have ever been slapped with a traffic ticket (and most
of us have), then you'll know that dealing with it can take
up a lot of your time and money. You have to fill out forms
for the court and may end up in traffic school. More than
likely, you will post bail or pay a fine for your violation,
and will have to pay not only the court for the privilege
of attending traffic school, but the traffic school itself
too. It makes a great deal of sense, therefore, to do what
you can to avoid this rigmarole and take the necessary steps
to avoid getting a ticket in the first place.
The
following tips have been provided for that very purpose.
Not surprisingly, many of them are common sense.
- Be
familiar with and follow traffic laws: Make a full stop
at stop signs. As long as it is safe to do so, stop at
traffic lights when the light turns yellow. Keep to the
speed limits.
-
Pay attention to your surroundings: Check your side and
rearview mirrors constantly and be on the look out for
police (in cars or on motorcycles) in front of and behind
you, and for traffic signal cameras.
-
If you are using a radar detector and are pulled over
for speeding, place it out of sight before the policeman
sees it.
-
Having a car that is clean, in sound working condition
and reasonably well maintained may go a long way toward
ensuring that you are not pulled over. You are less likely
to attract the attention of the police.
-
If you are driving on the freeway and notice a police
car behind you has exited, resist the temptation to drive
over the speed limit. Some police get immediately back
on the freeway and may still be behind you. This is one
reason why checking your rearview mirror regularly is
important. Also, watch your speed near highway on ramps
where police may be parked.
-
Make sure the tags on your license plate are current.
-
Wear your seatbelt.
-
Do not litter.
-
Do not have more passengers in the car than there is room.
-
When you are pulled over and if you think it would help,
cry.
