Addiction & Recovery Sponsors
Recovery from any disease, whether it is from drug addiction or alcoholism, is a long process, which may include several relapses. One method of dealing with these relapses is called, "cognitive behavioral relapse prevention." The goal of this method is to alter one's perception and thought process about relapse. If a person does relapse, rather than considering oneself a failure, a person is urged to think of it as a "slip." This type of program has proven to deliver a long-term success rate amongst many drug addicted individuals.
Another method that is popular is called, "Contingency Management." Based on the principle of rewards and punishment, this method makes a drug-free lifestyle more rewarding than a lifestyle addicted to drug use. The approach of this method is to install confidence and self-worth into a person who is leading a drug-free lifestyle.
