Attitudes and emotions change throughout our lives. When we have children our world changes, new responsibilities arise and with them new life circumstances and challenges. Being able to manage anger and emotional upset suddenly takes on new meaning. Failing to control your anger, especially when manifested with physical and emotional violence, can ruin lives and destroy relationships. If you are struggling with how to control and mange your anger there are local child abuse services and counseling alternatives for you and your family to consider.

Anger Management – Mental Illness And Crime

Anger is almost always a destructive emotion. It is reported that one in five Americans are dealing with an anger management problem. When the anger turns violent however, especially against children, acts of physical violence become issues for local law enforcement and child protective services. For those who work with child abuse offenders and deal with the family havoc that results from such unbridled anger, child abuse is both an illness and a crime.

Substance Abuse – When Repressed Anger Turns Violent

The expression of anger takes many forms such as simple venting to seeking revenge. In most cultures, it is not acceptable to reveal ones true emotions; so many people who need help fail to obtain it and therefore never learn how to effectively channel their anger constructively. Many instead choose illegal drugs to hide and numb their anger.

It is estimated that nearly 30 million Americans are struggling with drug and alcohol abuse. Drug and alcohol abuse that leads to suppression of anger can also lead to violent behavior against children and others. When this happens, there is a profound and immediate need to consider enrolling yourself in anger counseling. If you don’t, and you cause harm, most courts will order you to attend anger management counseling and treatment and successfully complete the course as a condition of your release and or probation.

Drugs like cocaine and methamphetamine cause biochemical changes in the brain. Emotional and mood variations can suddenly emerge into violent episodes. By facing both the physical and psychological factors behind an addict’s pain, substance abuse patients are made to understand the consequences of their addiction on their children and family. Once this reality is fully comprehended, the love for family in many cases pushes the person towards treatment and away from blind avoidance.

Determining Propensity For Anger – Danger Signs

There are danger signs that surface before the person actually commits a violent act against a spouse or child. These danger signs should indicate a growing concern that violence may not far behind. It is often a combination of conditions and symptoms that rather then a single cause that precipitates the event.

1. The person displays low self-esteem.

2. The person is unable to get over anger.

3. The person is easily provoked into argument.

4. The person is unable to attain emotional balance.

5. The person is often sleep deprived.

6. There is a family history of violence.

While any of these symptoms can be suggestive of other issues, they are commonly found in individuals who are unable to otherwise contain or channel their anger in constructive ways.

Local Treatment Options

There are private and publicly funded anger management classes, courses and support groups. There is also child abuse counseling centers and services that are part of the protective care services of the state and which address both domestic violence and child abuse cases. Domestic abuse therapists are trained counselors as are social workers and possess some level of expertise and training in treating both offenders and caring for the victims of such abuse.

In addition to the treatment strategies and above, there are a number of structured and pre-packaged programs for helping people learn to manage their anger more effectively. These programs vary in theory, method, and of course skill level.

The most valuable treatment is that which makes the person feel safe, supported and encouraged to make the desired changes in their behaviors.
